Osprey, my spiritual bird. I can’t exactly remember how it happened, but I’m pretty sure they chose me more than I chose them. Naturally imposing their beauty and personality upon me, as I observed them from the distance. There is grace in everything Ospreys do. Building their nests, providing for each other, protecting their homes, mating, raising young and teaching them all the skills they will need. Their patience is impressive as well as their search for moments of solitude. Their relaxing floating flight and breathtaking fish hunt. It’s all of this and more. I’m in constant awe.
I became very fond of one family of ospreys in Pascagoula. It was March of 2025. I started observing them regularly. Soon enough I was aquatinted with their lifestyle and habits. As I stood there for hours, I had my camera ready for action. But between those moments there was plenty of time for contemplation as well. And as I was thinking, the idea of Spirit of Osprey came very clear to me. There was something almost surreal and mystical about their appearance. My creative process started after the Osprey family moved on. They separated, each having their own life to embrace. Parents might meet for mating again next year, while juveniles will be perfecting their life skills on their own. There will be lots of hunting and resting, all in solitude. Until the next season. It all goes in circles. That’s the beauty of nature.
